Welcome to the IRIS website on Interactive Story Creation!
IRIS (Integrating Research in Interactive Storytelling) was an EU-funded project (Network of Excellence, FP7-ICT-231824) running from January 2009 to December 2011. The official website of IRIS is http://iris.scm.tees.ac.uk.
In our technical context, we define Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS) as "the endeavour to develop new media in which the presentation of a narrative, and its evolution, can be influenced, in real-time, by the user". Here, we present parts of the results of 3 years of research in the work package "Authoring Tools and Creation Methods". One of the main IRIS objectives has been to "make the next generation of Interactive Storytelling technologies more accessible to authors and content creators of different media backgrounds (scriptwriters, storyboarders, game designers)".

Authors in this field are often faced with a number of issues deriving from the complex and technical aspects of the used systems. These systems have a generative character and are therefore often based on AI (Artificial Intelligence) in different degrees of complexity. So not only the authoring tools provided for these systems have to deal with the speficic needs of creative authors, but also authors have to learn how to use these systems and tools.
This website provides examples and material to give you a deeper insight to these topics. We report on story modelling approaches that we explored within a number of practical case studies of authoring interactive storytelling content. The material includes information ressources, simple tools (partly for download), tutorials and links to further publications.
